Music, Art on Deck at This Week's Sunset Concert Series

Tuesday, May 15, 2012

The St. Charles Sunset Concert Festival this week welcomes Country Current, the U.S. Navy’s legendary country-bluegrass band, for a free waterfront concert on Friday evening, May 18th. Concert-goers will also be able to enjoy a special art event from 4 – 8 PM along the lakeside boardwalk hosted by the Westlake High School National Art Honor Society. The St. Charles Farmers Market will be open as well from 4 – 7:30 PM Friday evening and will feature, along with delicious produce, fresh flowers, desserts, baked goods, honey and hand-crafted soaps, the Maryland wines of family-owned Romano Vineyard and Winery.

The seven member Country Current band brings together musicians from diverse backgrounds with extensive high-profile recording and touring experience in the music scenes of Nashville, Tenn., New York City, New Orleans and more. Formed in 1973, the band is unique in that each member is a skilled performer on multiple instruments. Musicians on banjo, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, mandolin, fiddle, electric bass, upright bass, dobro, pedal steel guitar and drum set will entertain the entire family. Country Current has played at the Grand Ole Opry, for presidents Jimmy Carter, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, and overseas in Stockholm , Nova Scotia, and Beijing. Their stage presence is marked by “eye-popping” musicianship, fun and humor. For more information on Country Current, please visit http://www.navyband.navy.mil/country_current.shtml.

“Art on Deck” will entertain and fascinate everyone in the family! From facepainting (small charge of 50 cents), free craft projects, paint spinning and balloon dart art to creating recyclable artwork and perusing the student art exhibit, this unique exhibit is sure to send you home with something unique and beautiful!

St. Charles is pleased to welcome Romano Vineyard and Winery, a Maryland-bred and family-run vineyard to the Farmers Market and Summer Concert venue. The vineyard is home to six wine grape varietals – Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Chambourcin, Vidal, Cayuga and Traminette – as well as six table grape varietals and only produces wines from the grapes grown in their vineyard and those of carefully selected custom growers. Quality over quantity is the hallmark of Romano wines. (Proof of age required to purchase wine and wine cannot be opened in the O’Donnell Lake Restaurant Park venue.)

The Sunset Concert Festival is a summer-long arts festival sponsored by The St. Charles Companies and the Southern Maryland Agricultural Development Commission. Featuring a variety of local artists and musical genres, the concerts are being held every Friday night beginning at 7 p.m.
