Mt. Aventine at Chapman State Park, 3452 Ferry Pl, Indian Head, MD 20640
A hidden away gem in Indian Head that you probably haven’t visited before. Make sure to look behind the beautiful mansion, you will see an amazing photo opportunity that will include the Potomac River. Up front is a beautiful tree arch that is gorgeous all year round. Mt. Aventine’s Open House allows the drive in gates to be opned, so the walk isn’t as far. If you go any other time, the walk to reach the mansion and tree arch is about 1.5 miles. Please call ahead to see when Open Houses are happening as the schedule has not been updated for November.
Smallwood State Park, 2750 Sweden Point Rd, Marbury, MD 20658
A fun spot for families to camp during the Fall or just go for the day to enjoy the recycled tire playground! Pictures at the marina with the Potomac behind you with the Fall foliage is sure to be gorgeous. While there, enjoy the outdoor sculptures at Mattawoman Creek Art Center too. There is a short walking trail to enter next to Point Discovery Center. Gate fee during the week:$3 per car. Weekend fee: $5 per person.
Gilbert Run Park, 13140 Charles Street, Charlotte Hall, MD 20622
Fun family images can be on the boardwalk, on the swings, and on top of the hill. Lots of foliage to capture a beautiful backdrop for you family photos. Only open on weekends from now til 3rd Weekend in November, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Park closes for the season after the 3rd weekend in November for cars to drive in. You may still walk in after then.
George Washington Birthplace National Monument, 1732 Popes Creek Road, Colonial Beach, VA 22443
This gorgeous and historical land is just across the Harry Nice Bridge (about 40 minutes without traffic) and just around the corner from Colonial Beach. This is a favorite spot to take out of town family and friends. It is free to visit and full of history! Gorgeous scenery all year round, but nothing compares to the beautiful colors it offers during the Fall. Kids can run freely around the grounds and see a few animals. Many opportunities for photos. Don’t forget about the bridge, it’s a bit hidden but worth the photo opportunity! Free entry

James Monroe birthplace is 10 minutes away from George Washington’s, along with James Madison’s birthplace only 20 minutes away near Port Royal. So the 1st, 4th and 5th United States Presidents were all born in the area!
