Indoor Winter Activities for Children

Wednesday, January 14, 2015

The colder temperatures have arrived, which means cabin fever will soon set in. For anyone with children around the house, this is never a good thing. Endless hours of inside time is enough to drive any parent, or caretaker, insane. Here are a few activities to keep the little ones busy during these bitter cold months.

Go for a swim as a family during indoor family swim class Friday evenings, Saturday or Sunday at Lackey High School or North Point High School. Check out the full schedule on the Charles County Recreation Center website.

On Friday January 23rd from 6:40 to 7:3o pm. Enjoy special train activities at Smallwood Community Center. Activities include puzzles, a movie, and games.

If your kids love to cook, don't miss the "Let's Cook" program offered through the county. There are three different dates and themes including cupcake decorating and chocolate shop fun.

I can't imagine anything cuter than a bunch of 2 to 5-year-olds dressed up for a "preschool prom". On Friday February 13th, the Somers Community Center in La Plata will be holding a dance with games, refreshments, a red carpet, and plenty of photo opportunities. Check out the Charles County Recreation Guide for more information on registration.

Capital Clubhouse Ice Skating
Bring your family to the clubhouse for family skate sessions. Skate rentals are available for an additional fee. Be sure to look at the family skate schedule for specific times.

If ice skating is not your thing, grab your kids and take a run at rock climbing. The Capital Clubhouse features a 30 foot tall rock wall that has 4 different routes from beginners to advanced. All gear is provided on site.

Charles County Library Storytime
In January and February, various Charles County libraries host Saturday morning story time hours, which include a story, songs, and a short craft activity. Winter themes this year include hibernation, the tooth fair and more.

On January 20th from 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm at the La Plata library. Children ages 6-11 can learn about the science of helium while creating creatures out of balloons. Visit the Charles County Library calendar for more information on other children's programs and specific times for storytime.
