St. Patrick's Day History and Festivities

by Mike Billard

St. Patrick’s Day is just around the corner and I’m sure many of us are going to celebrate it in one way or another. We all know who St. Patrick was, right? The patron saint of green beer and . . . wait, that’s not quite right, is it? While the day is celebrated with parades and parties and social gatherings throughout the world, few who tip a mug of green beer in his honor know much more about the man other than he was Irish and . . .  wait, that’s not quite right, either. What? The patron saint of Ireland wasn’t Irish? Well, not exactly.

Join the March for Babies May 6 in St. Charles

by Craig Renner

I am pleased to serve as the chairman of the 2012 Charles County March for Babies, which will take place Sunday, May 6, in St. Charles. This important annual event helps raise awareness and important funding to provide for babies who are born prematurely or with birth defects. Our overall event goal is to raise $91,000 help prevent birth defects and other health issues associated with premature births.
Last year, more than 650 people attended the event, which moved this year to St. Charles. The new route will begin at Regency Furniture Stadium, go north on Piney Church Road, west on Billingsley Road, then north on St. Charles Parkway. Walkers will then make a right onto St. Andrews Drive, then walk around the beautiful lakes in Sheffield neighborhood, returning to walk west on Billingsley Road, then return via Piney Church Road to the stadium.
